"Uncle Mousa" dedicated 30 years to help students get to school safely

Mousa Al Zuwairi's dedication to keeping students safe on their way to school contributed to building five pedestrian bridges across Jordan's Amman.

Mousa Al Zuwairi’s long journey of giving started when one morning he saw a child run over by a car on the way to school.

Moved by the scene, he stepped in to help a group of young students, caught in horror, holding their hands to cross the street. The heartbreaking accident changed his life ever since.

For 30 years, Al Zuwairi headed to schools in his hometown Amman, Jordan, every morning to group students on one side of the road before regulating the traffic to allow children to safely cross to the other side. Al Zuwairi would gather students in batches and help them cross the street to until he makes sure everyone is safely at school. He would then return to the school gate in the afternoon to help students cross to the other side to go home.

With time, Al Zuwairi became known as “Uncle Mousa” whose presence brings safety to children. His work attracted media attention, and soon, authorities conducted field visits to the school before finally building a pedestrian bridge.

The impact Al Zuwairi made prompted him to bring the change to the rest of the schools. With the support of the Ministry of Education, Al Zuwairi spent the last 30 years moving across different schools to direct the traffic and help students reach their schools safely. He trained groups of older students to direct the traffic and ensure children’s safety.

Al Zuwairi continues his work to this day, delighted by students’ occasional drawings and “thank you” letters that he keeps as souvenirs to remind him of his purpose.

Thanks to Al Zuwairi’s three decades of work, several pedestrian bridges are now built near schools across Amman. Delighted to see his work bear fruitful results, Uncle Mousa holds pride in achieving zero runover accidents in school areas since he started his mission. For him, this is the real difference to make.

Make hope… Make a difference
