A group of environmentalists use renewable energy to light up remote areas in Oman.
In June 2016, Oman lit up with the launch of a small group of young volunteers with big hearts that strive to make a difference in people’s lives.
The Glow Volunteer Team was formed after a company urged its employees to take part of a volunteering competition that evaluates participants on the impact they make in communities. The team brought together volunteers to focus on providing solar lighting to houses in remote areas.
Through their modern approach to environment conservation, the team aimed to prove that light is not confined to electricity-powered homes, but the sun can brighten even the darkest of nights.
The team started introducing alternative energy to provide electricity in mosques at the mountains as part of its first phase. Several mosques in the ancient city of Qalhat, which houses 1,123 residents, were renovated and solar-powered.
The team’s work soon grew from an initiative to a community service after attracting fellow volunteers eager to make an impact.
The general admiration stems from the team’s futuristic insight that affirms the importance of using renewable energy to save the planet and protect the environment for upcoming generations.
Adopting renewable energy, the team believes, is vital to remote areas with poor infrastructure that rely on polluting diesel generators for electricity.
“Glow” extends beyond a title to become a symbol of young people’s dream to create a better tomorrow. The world needs young people who will help shape the future instead of fearing its uncertainty.
Make hope… Make a difference
